Wow...Madrid is incredible! I have seen more amazing art in the last 2 days than I have my whole life until now. Yesterday I went to the Prado Museum and today I went to the Sofia Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. I enjoyed today more, because I prefer the more modern and impressionist styles, and the Sofia Thyssen had an incredible collection. I saw Klee, Monet, Pissaro, Picasso, Gaugin, Goya, el Greco, and an amazing exibition on Modigliani long with pencil studies by Picasso, Toulouse-Latrec, and I couldn´t even tell you. It gets to the point where you go "Oh, another (yawn) amazing painting by another (yawn) famous artist!" I saw the whole gallery (better than I did at the Prado) but was really overwhelmed.
After that I took the subway to Plaza dos de Mayo, which commemorates a massacre by the government. At some point I ate and drank a half bottle of wine, so I´m REALLY relaxed right now. Two interesting observations. The first is "Why does this subway system seem to make more sense to me than NYC?¨ The only answer I can come up with is I´m not so tired when I climb up and down the steps, so I can actually process where I´m supposed to go.
Second observation...portraits of "Life on the subway" from both the outside looking through the windows and from the inside looking down the train would really be an interesting study in people watching! It is amazing how some faces just stand out, while others merge into the general whole.
Yep...really looked at a LOT of art today.
I really like Madrid. I´m going to stay here until Sunday, go to the airport and pick up a car, then probably head to Toledo. Kim was not able to come meet me. She just isn´t recovering as fast as she had hoped from some minor surgury. So I will wander on my own until Sandy gets here.
Take care all of you!
